A federal judge rejected Sam Bankman-Fried’s request for a new trial on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, rejecting the former head of the Federal Security Service’s attempt to reopen his criminal case based on claims of evidence discovered in the hadith.
issued Federal judge Louis Kaplan ruled in New York, where he oversaw the Bankman-Fried trial in 2023. Bankman-Fried was convicted of the FTX collapse and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The application was filed under Rule 33, which allows defendants to seek a new trial if new evidence appears. Bankman-Fried argued that the jury did not hear the full picture of FTX’s finances, including claims that the exchange has assets that can pay fees to clients.
He also argued that evidence related to the lawyers’ involvement in the FTC’s decisions could support his claim that he acted in good faith and not with criminal intent.
However, Kaplan rejected the request even after the bankman-farid withdrawal was attempted. Bankman-Fried claimed that the judge would not be fair in making a decision regarding the request.
The judge leaves the appeal of the bank-free trial open to the second department as the main method before the conviction.
