Vitalik Buterin warned the producers Ethereum From the creation of EVM chains “copy and paste” and connect the second layer superficially, to ensure that the environment faces the threat of stagnation if it continues to prioritize convenience and destroy real creativity.
When writing on the X platform, Buterin said that his recent actions and his comments on the expansion of the second phase show a deeper problem: many projects rely on well-known practices instead of exploring new areas.
Buterin criticized the current process of opening EVM-compatible blockchains and connecting them to Ethereum through trusted bridges with weeks of delays.
Compare this process with protocol copying Decentralized Finance Early adopters like Compound for governance – an approach that was initially seen as effective but limited.
“If you build an EVM chain without a reliable bridge to Ethereum, it’s very bad,” Buterin said, adding that the ecosystem no longer needs “copy-paste” EVM chains or other single-layer networks.
Buterin said that the Ethereum base is already growing and will provide more trading power on EVM over time. Although the space will not be unlimited – especially with the increase in AI services that require low latency and acceleration – he said that Ethereum can have many applications without being divided into countless networks.
Instead of copying existing architecture, Buterin encouraged architects to focus on systems that provide new capabilities. He cited privacy-enhancing architectures, customizable environments, and high-speed systems as examples of innovations that expand what blockchains can do.
His comments show a growing concern that infrastructure development has become more about growth rather than innovation, with teams focusing on what is known and deployed quickly rather than seeking long-term success.
The second main topic of Buterin’s post was the difference between how services are sold to be compatible with Ethereum and how they are actually related to technology.
He said that he supports the architecture of the “service chain” where the connection to Ethereum is first class and not just an afterthought.
For example, Buterin explained how to use prediction markets where delivery, stability, and user accounts are in the first place. For EthereumEven the most advanced products are available in the list or the second part that reads the L1 state directly.
Conversely, he criticized projects that work mainly as independent chains but add simple integration with Ethereum for cosmetic purposes – such as sending a bridge only to meet the environment’s expectations.
Buterin also described another category of use chains that target organizations such as public records or social media platforms. These systems can publish cryptographic evidence, including STARK-verified Merkle Roots, on the blockchain to provide algorithmic transparency, even if they are unreliable or trust-neutral in the Ethereum concept.
Although these chains are “not Ethereum,” Buterin said they still support the same vision by supporting blockchains that can still be compatible with Ethereum.
Buterin summed up his message in two points: create something that adds new value, and make sure that the entire project reflects his true technical relationship with Ethereum.
He told project developers that credibility does not come from calling itself “Ethereum consensus,” but from an architecture that truly deserves the title.
