Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin is all-in on Zcash with a new bet on privacy

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin donated to Shielded Labs, supporting the development of Crosslink, a unanimously proposed upgrade to Zcash.

The move signals Buterin’s growing commitment to privacy-preserving infrastructure, as well as growing interest in strengthening finality and establishment guarantees in the proof-of-work blockchain.

In simple terms, Crosslink adds a second confirmation system that confirms transactions faster and more conclusively. This reduces the risk of chain reorganizations, pullbacks and double spend attacks.

As a result, exchanges can shorten confirmation times, cross-chain bridges get stronger security guarantees, and applications become easier. Under construction on Zcash.

What does Shielded Labs do for Zikash?

Shielded Labs is a research and engineering group focused on Zcash, working on updates to the underlying protocols rather than applications or tools.

Its mission is focused on improving Zcash’s long-term security, ease of use and cryptographic guarantees, especially for protected transactions. Design privacy first.

Buterin’s support comes amid a broader shift in his public advocacy toward privacy and flexibility rather than growth or convenience measures.

In recent months, it has been repeatedly argued that the blockchain should improve worst-case scenarios, not the best user experience.

This includes resistance to censorship, reducing the assumption of trust and protecting users even in hostile circumstances.

The push towards privacy is more important than ever

Buterin warned that financial transparency without strong cryptographic privacy creates long-term risks, including surveillance, coercion and systemic fragility.

He has increasingly praised systems that integrate privacy at the protocol level rather than adding it as an optional feature. Zcash’s protected transaction model closely aligns with this philosophy.

By supporting Shielded Labs, Buterin is actually supporting privacy-preserving design with stronger establishment guarantees — two areas he sees as underinvested in the sector.

The donation also comes at a time when Ethereum itself is reevaluating parts of its scaling and security path.

while Buterin criticized superficial innovation and infrastructure “copy and paste” Elsewhere, his support for Zcash highlights what he sees as significant progress: protocol-level updates that improve security, finality and user protection.

In that sense, the move has less to do with Ethereum versus Zcash—and more to do with the type of blockchain architecture Buterin believes will stick around in the long run.
