Ethereum founder: Don’t try to transfer Ethereum to Apple or Google

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called on the developer community to rethink the network’s true purpose and warned against attempts to transform the cryptocurrency space into another version of big tech companies.

Buterin said the focus should not be on the technological brilliance or efficiency of Apple and Google, but on building what he calls “safe haven technologies” to protect individuals from increasing government surveillance and the dominance of big corporations.

He expressed concerns about the direction the world is headed, including expanded government surveillance, monopoly by technology companies and manipulation through social media platforms.

He also expressed disappointment that Ethereum is not playing a greater role in addressing these challenges.

He explained that compared to technologies he sees as liberating, such as Starlink, Signal and artificial intelligence models, the network has yet to have a significant impact on improving people’s lives.

Buterin rejected the idea of limiting the role of digital currencies to decentralized finance (DeFi), stressing that financial freedom is important but does not address most concerns related to the future of the world.

However, he admitted that Ethereum is not a tool that can solve all problems, as bringing about global change requires a central authority that conflicts with the network’s philosophy.

Instead, Buterin believes that Ethereum’s role should be to serve as a defensive layer that supports the development of technologies that protect privacy and digital freedom.
