Coinbase, one of the largest digital currency trading platforms in the United States, celebrated its 14th anniversary, and CEO Brian Armstrong revealed the company’s biggest strategic goals:
Incorporate one billion users into the open financial system.
“Armstrong” released pictures of the platform’s first interface in 2012, when it was just a simple Bitcoin wallet, and later turned into a comprehensive financial platform that provides digital currency, stock and commodity trading, providing services to individuals, institutions and developers around the world.
In order to achieve its goal of 1 billion users, Coinbase is completely restructuring its business model to focus on financial derivatives, futures and regulated prediction markets, rather than relying solely on traditional spot trading.
The company is also stepping up its expansion with a new partnership with the “Hyperliquid” system, which will adopt USDC as the primary settlement asset in addition to managing the protocol’s treasury reserves.
Coinbase has begun integrating artificial intelligence-based payment protocols such as x402, allowing intelligent agents and AI applications to make instant payments using USDC, a move that reflects the company’s move into the future of smart financial services.
Despite these expansions, the company still recorded a net loss of $394 million in the first quarter of 2026 as portfolio values declined during the market correction.
Coinbase also laid off about 14% of its employees in May to shift resources to infrastructure and artificial intelligence technology.
Analysts believe that the upcoming CLARITY Act in the United States may become an important turning point in the encryption industry, facilitating the entry of traditional capital, which may support Coinbase’s ambition to reach an unprecedented global user base.
