The U.S. Department of Justice has announced the opening of compensation requests for victims of the famous “OneCoin” scam, considered one of the largest frauds in the history of digital currencies.
Affected persons can submit requests to recoup some of the funds through the Recovery Program, which has allocated more than $40 million in forfeited assets for distribution, although the program raised a total of more than $4 billion between 2014 and 2019.
The ministry explained that investors who purchased OneCoin during this period may be eligible to submit applications through the entity responsible for administering the scheme, with the last submission date being June 30.
The move comes as the project’s co-founder, Ruja Ignatova, remains a fugitive as she is on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, with a huge financial reward available to anyone who provides information leading to her arrest.
On the other hand, some of its partners face court rulings, including co-founder Carl Greenwood, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and other officials involved in money laundering and fraud in multiple countries.
These developments confirm that US authorities are continuing to hunt for those responsible for the case while trying to partially compensate the victims despite the huge losses.
