Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin: Layer 2 solutions no longer scale the Ethereum network

Recent developments indicate that the initial view of the role of second-layer solutions in scaling the Ethereum network is no longer valid, Vitalik Buterin told Vitalik Buterin in his latest statement.

He explained that progress on many L2 networks has been slower than expected, especially in terms of decentralization and interoperability, while the main network is currently achieving low fees and continues to scale directly, with gas limits expected to increase in the coming years.

He pointed out that the scaling concept is based on L2 solutions that fully inherit the security of Ethereum, but many of them rely on relatively centralized control mechanisms or bridges, which puts them beyond this definition.

He also noted that some projects may not progress beyond phase one due to technical or organizational reasons, making it inaccurate to describe them as extensions of Ethereum.

Buterin called for viewing second-layer solutions as multiple systems with varying degrees of connectivity to Ethereum rather than lumping them into one category, emphasizing that they must provide added value beyond simply adding capacity, such as specialization or high efficiency.

On the other hand, he emphasized the importance of continuing to strengthen the underlying Ethereum protocol and clarifying the level of guarantees provided by these solutions.
